At Salt House, we are experimenting with an outreach + advertising + social justice mash-up during the season of Lent. The aim is to connect Facebook check-ins with making real difference in the world.

We started this campaign Sunday, Feb 7 and it will run it throughout the season of Lent. People who attend Salt House for worship are invited to check-in at Salt House on Facebook and for each check-in Salt House will make a $1.00 donation the Housing Assistance Program which is a 501(c)3. We will keep track of all the check-ins, keep people updated with our progress, and communicate via announcements, slides, email, newsletter, and social media.

Things to consider:

  • A Facebook check-in usually gets seen by approximately 200 people on Facebook.
  • The anatomy of a Facebook check-in includes a personal referral, a link to the Salt House Facebook page, map location, and organization rating (Salt House is currently 4.9 stars with 8 reviews).
  • The great thing is that the referral on Faceboook is not promoted by the institution, but by real people in real time. People who share their check-in then become the first responders to any inquires about what Salt House is and who is involved. Power to the people!
  • The Salt House Shelter in partenrship with The New Bethlehem Project has already surpassed an initial fundraising goal of $300,000 (which is awesome), so we have chosen to invest in the Housing Assistance Program (HAP).
  • The HAP aims to prevent homelessness by offering financial assistance to at-risk families who are in danger of loosing their homes (more detailed info at

Basically, CHECK-IN FOR CHANGE is a "two-fer" with the money that we'd spend because we get Facebook visibility that is promoted by real people (not ads) and we get to donate to a great cause that connects us to the content of the season.
