WHAT IS HOLY COMMUNION?

Holy Communion is considered one of the two sacraments in the Lutheran (ELCA) church (Baptism is the other).  This means that we believe that something happens, that God is present in a wonderful way in the everyday things of bread and wine/juice.

No one ever fully understands the mystery of Jesus’ presence in this meal, but 1st grade is an engaging age to have a conversation about it. (Knowing that some kids will join in the conversation when they're older for various reasons).

We call it “First Communion,” regardless of whether your child has had communion or not. It can be a first, or an explanation and conversation of what has already happened.

The structure of our First Communion experience is to have two classes (with intentional at-home conversations for families in-between the two).  The experience culminates on a Sunday morning set aside as the First Communion Sunday, where our whole Salt House community celebrates this important faith milestone in the lives of our children.

If you have a child who would like to participate in First Communion, please email us with answers to the following questions:

  • Do you have a 1st grader (or older) who would like to participate in our First Communion class? Please include their name and age.
  • If yes, do these dates work for you family?
    • 1st Class: May 6th, 11:30-1pm
    • 2nd Class: May 20th, 11:30-1pm
    • First Communion Sunday: June 3rd during worship

We continue to sculpt the experience of First Communion, recognizing that we all come from various backgrounds. Please let Rachel or Pastor Sara know of any questions, concerns, or ideas – we’re open to meeting you and your family in a way that is meaningful.
