Jesus always had an eye for the one who was missing. The left out. The neglected. The overlooked. He'd be the one to go find them, to invite them in, to pull up a chair for a make space for the absent one.
Salt House is our attempt to be like Jesus. We've noticed how young adults don't have a place in most regular churches; though by no means intentional, they get lost in the shuffle. Many young adults think church is boring, unimportant, inaccessible. So we're trying a grand experiment, to do things differently – because millennials should have access to the life of Jesus and a fun, organic, real community to be a part of as they explore and embody that Life.
The mission of Salt House is to engage young adults in living like Jesus through relationship with God (Come), each other (Thrive), and the needs of our world (Go).
And for Salt House – this grand experiment with God – to work, we need YOU.
You can be part of the Salt House Scaffolding. Scaffolding is put in place to help provide the structure and support necessary for something to be built, to thrive and grow. We need people to be scaffolding for Salt House! People of all ages who are ready to roll up their sleeves, to listen for God, to dive in and get things ready for this new community – and continue this work of carving out that space in the first years as Salt House becomes a home.
Those who are interested and curious about becoming Salt House Scaffolding will gather for worship on Sunday, February 15th – this is a chance to hear more and make the decision to join. Then, as a community, we'll spend the season of Lent together in worship (February 22nd – March 22nd) – casting vision for who we are and why we're choosing this.
Could this be you?
Some of the work that needs to be done and some of the teams that need to be formed are known, while others will emerge out of the actual gifts of actual folks who form the Scaffolding. We need people: to make coffee. To pray and listen for God. To mentor others in following Jesus. To set up tables and chairs. To do graphic design and try creative approaches to marketing. To make food. To serve food. To eat food. To clean up food. To help with the landscaping. To sing. To play instruments with the band. To share stories and testimony. To greet people and connect people to others. To read Scripture. To help listen for the needs of our neighborhood and city. To respond to the needs of our neighborhood and city. To light candles. To bake Communion bread. To care for children. To discover the possibilities of being and becoming God's people in ways that are true to the emerging realities of millennials – and to faithfully live into a life following Jesus.
And we also need people to dream: God-shaped, God-sized dreams about what and who Salt House can be. As we look toward launching our worship services we know that we don't have it all figured out – which is both exciting and terrifying. We want Salt House to continue to be shaped by those who are listening for God (and who may not have joined us yet).
Speaking of launching worship...We plan to do that on Palm Sunday, March 29, 2015! That means it's time for the Scaffolding to be built! Is God inviting you into a season of service as Salt House Scaffolding?
